Patiala Measured Drawing

A - Tank & Singh's House

Architectural Design Studio
Studio 2

The measured drawing program in the second year looked at understanding architecture through the lens of history and culture. The theme for the year being 'Domesticity', the study involved understanding mainly homes and institutions built in the historic city of Patiala in Punjab, India. The study was spread out across the four quadrants around the fort and involved walking around the city; documenting houses and structures that were built around 100-200 years ago. In doing so, one learnt about not only the cultural aspects of the city but also the history of the built environment around them.

The A-Tank is a (now-dysfunctional water tank built in the British era situated adjacent to the North-West edge of the Qila Mubarak fort. It is about 107 years old and is a composite structure made up of thin steel members with a load bearing brick anchor. The tank in its inception served as water supplier for the entire neighborhood for about 50-55 years and with the coming of introduction of newer water supply technologies, the tank was shut down. Being built in the early 20th century, the tank houses several intriguing steel joineries and serves as an important landmark in the city of Patiala.

This 90 year old haveli is situated on the North-Western quadrant of the Qila Mubarak. It served as a residence for a Minister of the King. The house being almost a century old is a load-bearing brick structure with even ceilings made using a reinforced-brick layout. It houses various  intricately carved details and is built in a courtyard typology.
